Weddings in the 21 century

So French, so adorable

On August 8, 2008 gorgeous Cynthiya married handsome Jeff in an amazing garden setting at the Inn in Topanga serving organic food and wine. To my heart’s delight it was a French theme. Tables were named after places the couple had visited and fallen in love with, the favors were the cutest bottles of Rose, the colors were black, white and dark red, the centerpieces on the reception table was a Tour Eiffel on a slab of – deep dark roses and please enjoy the cake.

What exited me most were Cynthiya’s vintage lace dress and the amazing head piece she wore in lieu of a veil, the trend for 2009. Many brides find that veils have a tradition and meaning, which does not fit to their temporary weddings, which rarely follow strict religious rules or outmoded regulations and etiquettes.

A few more gorgeous hats from feathered art to the face cuddling cloche from my upcoming green weddings book.

Vintage Hat Box has a great selection of hats suited for sassy brides.

Eco-lustrious

A while ago I pondered about the amazing new word creations green guys and girls have come up with in my “Green Weddings-What?” on Angeliquevents.com. From Ecoist, Ecorazzi and Ecolibrium to descriptions like ecolustrious, eco-chic and econormous the world is changing by using a new language. There is a story out there that aborigines in a land far far away from any “modern” life did not see the ships hovering on their horizon as they did not have a word for them. You can’t think it so it isn’t there… To get the green vocabulary out into the mass consciousness will certainly have an effect as words have energy and energy moves mountains. Treehugger reported today that the green lingua has made it into Chambers Dictionary

BBC News reports:

“‘Electrosmog’ refers to the electromagnetic fields emitted by computers and mobile phones, ‘eco-village‘ is a term used for small ecologically-sustainable communities and ‘carbon footprint‘ is the measure of the impact human activities on the environment.”

There is also ‘food miles‘, referring to how far away your food come from, and ‘green tax‘, in reference to putting a price on undesirable things like CO2 or mercury to reduce pollution.
Treehugger even has a “Jargon Watch” where you can brush up on your cool.

Veging out…

Fantastic, finally there are organic fast food places. I was hoping that somebody would realize my kids idea of a healthy hotdog hut or better, a drive through window to an earth friendly quesadilla planet, with tasty fare like Howdy’s (Malibu’s star studded Taqueria, where we meet Mulder or Mc Gyver…) just organic.

And now the universe answered my desire; there is O Burger in WeHo following in the foot steps of Orean’s Health Express.
It’s not mainly vegetarian or vegan but it’s a start, at least the chickens are not tortured and the cows aren’t hormone packed and tranquilized.
What’s next? An adventure trip through vegan and vegetarian restaurants in LA. (I was once and never again at Juliano’s in SM and the salty, dripping sauce gave me the culinary creeps, so stay tuned)
Here’s the plan, given to me by one of my super brides and passionate vege cook Candace:

Oreans Health Express is not terribly fast but it is terribly delicious. I recommend the Philly Cheese and the hot-o-dog (tastes like a hotdog!) but everything I have had there has been yummy.

In Hollywood there are two “California Vegan” locations. I used to live near the one on Sunset Blvd. so went there often. We liked the Thai yellow curry with tofu, Orange chicken and vege chicken (same as the crispy chicken appetizer).

In Little Ethiopia on Fairfax, there is a vegan Ethiopian restaurant called Rahel’s. If you like Ethiopian food that place is great. The greens are especially delish. You can park in the neighborhoods in the surrounding areas usually (I park a block west of the place in the neighborhood behind).

In El Segundo (I used to work there) I would go to Papillon once a week – at least. My favorite is the House special tofu and the vegetarian hot and sour soup. The veggie fried wontons are tasty as well. Everything I have had there is amazing (I haven’t had any of the fish or shrimp stuff). They are my favorite place in the world :)

There is also a new place, Veggie Grill, in El Segundo that I haven’t been to but it is getting rave reviews from my friends and I will most likely be going there soon. Apparently, they have a location in Irvine as well. My friends said that the crispy chicken was fantastic, the beef dish that another had was very “beef like” but that the carrot cake was not so good.

Also in Eagle Rock, there is a place called Fatty’s. I have heard very mixed reviews though. Most of the bad ones are that the service there is abysmal and that the owner is rude so we haven’t ventured there. Even if the food is out of this world we don’t want to deal with being treated punkish when we’re paying for the food/service. But there have been good experiences there too so…

Designer Energy for any location

Phillippe Starck, the French designer who created amazing stuff for many years much of which unfortunately wasn’t that necessary seems to have regained his self confidence and love for life: after being depressed for a while due to his self declared “useless” designs he invented a personal invisible windmill ‘Democratic Ecology’. It was introduced at Milan’s Greenergy Design show earlier this year “in a vibrant display relaying the intent to enable every man, woman and child on Earth to generate their own power in designer style. The transparent mini-turbine will be available to all in September 2008 and, in typical Starck style, if everyone’s going to have one he’s going to make sure they all look great.” http://www.greendaily.com/2008/07/04/designer-personal-wind-power/

Mountain Marvel near Malibu

A Spanish Colonial from the beginning of the century has the authenticity and flavor, which makes it luring to move in and stay forever or at least spend a week under it’s palm trees. The modern Spanish imitations, often the delight of mid sized movie stars, miss the artful decadence, the patina of wild 20ties, crazy 30ies and eccentric forties. The mountain marvel, which I revisited recently and am happy to offer as my “laid back de luxe” wedding and event site, shines with wooden floors on which celebrities have danced, mafia has played poker and gorgeous ladies were paid to entertain on many levels. Today, when we dine on antic tables under art deco lamps, the old stories are awake and mingle with our party guests, a feeling, which is truly unique and stays with us for days afterwards. Bill, the villa’s owner for over twenty years, restored her with great sensitivity, weaving in spiritual vibes and stories from other life times. He is the keeper of vintage beauty and only allows events, which truly enjoy his creation and honor his philosophy.

Wedding Locations in Southern California

Malibu Nature Preserve

The first interview in the light of my green interrogating saber is Malibu’s Nature Preserve. I already was enchanted by the place but now, after interviewing Peter Ireland, president of the “Nature Trust”, the non-profit company who owns the property, I realized that I discovered the first eco-cool wedding place in LA. Peter told me that there actually are manicured lawns, which I had assumed to be simply and naturally gorgeous like the whole property. Even a perfect eco-system does not pull its own weeds, the meticulous gardeners do. They have created lawns beautiful inside and out as they are void of fertilizers and pesticides with wild life of all kinds grazing them without dropping dead or sick. Not that the foxes, bobcats and mountain lions would come that close, the lawns are by the human dwellings, but the deer do. They look at Peter with those beautiful wondering eyes and accept his presence at least for a while as he vibrates caring and sensitivity. They usually dash off when he moves, he’s a human after all and who can trust us? But Peter doesn’t like to hold onto things or deer, he goes with the flow, the ocean breeze and follows the natural laws of the land. That’s how he could restore the property back to health after it was abused for years by a rather rowdy equestrian center. Just recently he found three Salamanders by a little stream and they only thrive where there is prime spring water. If that isn’t amazing enough, his property is preparing an organic garden in one of the fenced tennis courts – so that they don’t have to shoosh and slash away the rabbits and other critters who naturally find delight in stealing fresh goodies. Considerate? There’s more. All alu, plastic and wine bottles are recycled by the workers who share his vision. I could go on and on but will at least mention one more jewel, Diana Temple, the Nature Preserves creative cook. I always found, when a chef is able to create vegan wonders and vegetarian visions and make people ask for more, he/she is a God in the culinary genius culture. “Diana” is the goddess of the hunt but chef Diana shines with vege’s made into the banquets of dreams. She also delivers “regular cuisine” but slabs of meat slapped on charcoal grills is not the aim.

“Sometimes we’ll find red tail hawks arguing with wild parrots”, Peter says, “but other than that it is all about peaceful coexistence and the love for life”.

Green locations

To find truly green locations is one of the more difficult tasks for a green wedding, depending how thorough you want to get. Starting with location rentals at $5000 many sites offer natural surroundings but not the matching earth conscious stewardship of their land. The shade gets a little greener when our money supports a good cause: protecting land from developers, supporting historic sites, museums and keeps rivers clean. Peter Ireland from the Nature Preserve in Malibu is one of the good guys, hugging his trees and loving his non-manicured lawns. Joan Pankratz from the Upper Las Virgines property, watches over what she lovingly calls: The Ranch and the Wright Organic Resource Center is all about protecting the planet. Restaurants like the Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga, offering organic food and filtered water since a decade or two, move onto greener pastures with LEED lights, recycled paper in the office and being associated with one of LA’s most experienced eco friendly wedding planners, Angelica Weihs from Green Weddings&Events.

The creme de la green is the Airlie Mansion in Virginia, the best example of how perfect it can be. We will take the list of all the cool stuff they do and compare it with wedding locations in LA. Check back in, this will be an interesting list from happy greenish management to the clouded corporate wedding machines.
